Uncovering the Truth: Identifying Original 1969–1970 Mustang Dash Pads

When restoring a classic Mustang, details matter. One of the most visible and defining features of a 1969 or 1970 Mustang interior is the dash pad. Knowing how to identify an original factory pad can make the difference between a true concours restoration and a good reproduction.

A/C vs. Non-A/C Dash Pads

All ’69 and ’70 Mustangs—including Mach 1s, Boss 302s, and Shelbys—used the same basic dash pad design. The two main differences were:

  • Air Conditioning vs. Non-A/C
    • A/C cars (and rare power ventilation cars) had a center cutout in the dash to accommodate an extra duct.
    • Non-A/C cars did not have this cutout.
  • Color Options
    • Ford offered several colors from the factory, depending on the part number and year.

Factory Color Chart

Below is the dash pad color chart taken from the 1975 final version of the Master Parts Catalog. These are the official color codes for 1969–1970 Mustang dash pads:

Type Part Number (Less Suffix) Blue Red Ivy Gold Nugget Gold Black

With A/C D0ZZ-6504282 -D
Without A/C C9ZZ-6504282 -A1D -A1G -A1Y -A1A

Two OEM Manufacturers

  • Utica (Ford-owned) — Shelby, Michigan. Identified by a UT stamp in the mold.
  • Davidson Rubber Company — Farmington, New Hampshire. Identified by a KZ7 stamp in the mold.

Both manufacturers supplied A/C and non-A/C versions, and both are considered authentic OEM for 1969–1970.

Where to Find the Manufacturer Stamp

Look for the stamp on the underside of the passenger side of the dash pad while it’s mounted in the car. You’ll typically see either UT or KZ7.

How to Spot an Original Dash Pad

  1. Check the Stamp — Confirm UT (Utica) or KZ7 (Davidson) on the passenger-side underside.
  2. Inspect the Duct Openings
    • Assembly-line originals have clean, uniform openings around the defrost vent area.
    • Later service replacements are often rough-cut with sharp edges.

Why Authentic Dash Pads Matter

For concours-level restorations, a correct dash pad isn’t just cosmetic—it’s authenticity. Getting these details right can improve judging scores, increase resale value, and give your interior the same look and feel it had when it left the factory.
